The 2011 Ford Mustang today breaks new ground, cracking the record books as not only the most fuel-efficient Mustang ever, but also the first production car in history to produce more than 300 horsepower and more than 30 mpg highway.

The Mustang’s official EPA ratings – completed this week – certify that models equipped with the 305-hp 3.7-liter V-6 and available six-speed automatic transmission achieve 31 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city. The standard six-speed manual transmission is rated at 30 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city.

“The Mustang engineering team aimed high and, through hard work, achieved fuel economy numbers that elevate Mustang into a class by itself,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development.

“At no other time in Mustang’s history – for that matter, in automotive history – have we been able to talk about 305 horsepower and 31 miles per gallon. The Mustang truly is a no-compromises sports car,” said Kuzak.

Explorer Finds Sweet Home in Chicago
Back to the Top News Support our Schools Tips Facts Go Green Links

“Come on, baby, don't you want to go… sweet home Chicago” goes the classic blues song by Robert Johnson. Had the song been written today it might have been about the next-generation Ford Explorer, which will be produced at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant beginning in the fourth quarter of this year, the company announced today.

Ford is investing nearly $400 million in its Chicago manufacturing facilities to launch production of the new, fuel-efficient Ford Explorer. The company also will add 1,200 new jobs to staff a second production shift at Chicago Assembly Plant and increase production at the nearby Chicago Stamping Plant.

The next-generation Explorer will be built at the Chicago Assembly Plant on a flexible assembly line alongside the new Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans. Ford’s $400 million investment includes approximately $180 million in manufacturing investment at the Chicago sites and about $220 million for launch and engineering costs. In addition, Ford will be making significant investment in supplier tooling to support next-generation Explorer production.

Ford's Fusion Pulls Ahead of the Hybrid Pack
Back to the Top News Support our Schools Tips Facts Go Green Links

By Dan Carney MSNBC

Some new cars gain notoriety for a specific attribute, like artful style, sublime comfort or incomparable safety. The Ford Fusion Hybrid is gaining notoriety for introducing the idea that U.S. carmakers can take the lead in fuel-saving, hybrid-electric drivetrain technology.

That may surprise drivers who have paid only passing attention to hybrids, and it may upset those who worship at the throne of Toyota. But the truth is that the Ford Fusion Hybrid is the best hybrid model in the U.S. market.

It is the best in the U.S. in part because it is the best for the U.S. It wears no egg-shaped hypermile bodywork, doesn’t ask its occupants to contort themselves to fit inside like the old pack-college-students-in-a-VW stunt and doesn’t demand any creative financing for regular Americans with regular jobs to purchase it.

Warranties and Service Contracts

A warranty is an important part of the vehicle purchase you are about to make. The warranty is of significant importance in assessing the total value and total price of the deal. A new-car warranty is included in your price so be sure you understand the entire manufacturer's new vehicle warranty terms before signing. All new cars today come with a manufacturer's warranty. Usually, that coverage will last three years from the day you buy. Some may cover you for just one year; some will last much longer. Many warranties will be of the "either/or" type: e.g. "five years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first."

Extra warranties or service contracts on new or used vehicles will cost you. Ask the Ohio Ford dealer exactly what the warranty will pay for if you need work done on the car. If something is covered, ask whether it is 100 percent covered for every problem or if you will be liable for some of the cost. For example, the engine is covered, but just which parts? Spark plugs or hoses, for example, won't be covered. In some cases, covered parts that are damaged by non-covered parts are no longer covered (say a broken radiator hose ruins the engine). So be clear before you decide on the car. A basic warranty covers most parts of the vehicle, but not items that are subject to everyday wear and tear. An oil filter, for example, is expected to wear out and be replaced, as are light bulbs, engine belts and wiper blades -- and so they are rarely covered.

Checking with the manufacturer

Most new vehicle warranties are standard, but visiting a manufacturer's Web site can tell you what your vehicle offers in the way of warranties. Make sure you know just what you must do to keep the warranty valid. For example, if you use a non-authorized mechanic to do work on the car, or you install or work on something yourself, and it isn't an acceptable part, will that void the warranty for all or some of its coverage?

Read the manual

Details of the warranty will be in your owner's manual. Find out what hidden fees come with the warranty. Some may have a deductible, much like your insurance coverage. Some may require fees if you wish to cancel it, and others may have limitations. If other items are covered, e.g. rust; be sure you know just how they are covered. Is a rust spot covered? Or must you have major rust damage for the warranty to apply.

Check out the free "extras" that come with some new car warranties. Some makers will help you if you break down or unlock your car if you've locked the keys inside. You may consider these kinds of warranty extras -- like roadside service -- worth a lot to you. Your car's tires will come with a warranty from their manufacturers, and so will the battery. The emissions equipment on your vehicle is covered by warranty for five years or 50,000 miles, a requirement of federal law.

When you buy a used vehicle, check to see if any of the original new car warranty is still valid. If the vehicle has not reached the limit of mileage or years, you will almost always be covered by what is left. But don't assume -- check with the manufacturer.

Used cars may also come with warranties developed by a Ohio Ford dealer or manufacturer. Check them thoroughly. There is no single model for a used car warranty -- read it fully and understand it. Talk to your Ford dealership about pre-paid maintenance plans and pre-paid repair plans for more details.
